About the Exhibition and Satellite Events
The Southwest School of Art & Craft begins 2008 with the unique exhibition Te Tataitanga / Bind Together showcasing works by New Zealand artists who blend indigenous Maori and European influences in their work. The paintings, sculptures, jewelry, weaving, photographs and other exhibited works will reflect New Zealand’s dramatic landscapes, its people, and its rich, diverse traditions – specifically in terms of the country’s unique bi-cultural identity. Doing so should particularly resonate with San Antonio’s own blended Anglo and Mexican bi-cultural scene.
Te Tataitanga / Bind Together will introduce North American audiences to the work of artists who, by blending Maori and European art influences and paying special attention to materials, convey many compelling visions of their unique bicultural country.
The art school will also be the axis around which myriad New Zealand-related events and cultural activities will revolve – from Maori dance performances, to New Zealand cuisine prepared by one of its best-known chefs, to two days of public demonstration of Maori tattooing.
