Thursday night is a VERY busy night for the galleries at the Southwest School of Art & Craft.

The following receptions will take place from 5:30-7:30 on February 11:

The mad dash to complete holiday shopping is on. Here at the art school we know the difficulty of shopping for artists-even we have a hard time figuring out what to get our colleagues. A survey of our faculty, staff and students yielded the following list:

1. Handmade Items by Other Artists.

Artists appreciate the work of other artists. Hunt down gifts made with extraordinary care by an artist and the payoff will be well worth it.

2. Gift Certificate for a Class.

Give the gift of advancing their expertise. A gift certificate for a class or workshop at a local art school or college with a respected artist and teacher will go a long way to advance their skills.

3. Inspiration.

Fill their days with new ideas and images. Art books (coffee table books of other artists’ work, technique books for beginners, & biographies of artists), magazine subscriptions, and audiobooks are great for artists to have on hand. Local museum memberships provide year-round inspiration with the added benefit of supporting the arts in your community.

4. Gift Certificate for Art Supplies.

Artists love the smell of new supplies. San Antonio favorites include Clay World and Herwicks. Popular online suppliers: Asel Art, Cheap Joes, and Dick Blick.

5. High-quality Essential Supplies.

Premium sable brush sets, drawing journals, nice paper, drawing pencil sets…no matter what their medium, artists’ needs are fundamental. Splurge on the higher quality supplies that they drool over.

6. Silent Retreat.

Artists’ minds are constantly exercised (and sometimes worn out) with thoughts of work. A good massage, spa treatment, or any other de-stressing gift can help rejuvenate your favorite artist to make room for the next great idea.

7. Altruism.

Support what they do by donating to the art world in their name. Sponsor a child in an art program, give a membership in an arts organization that lobbies for or assists artists (CERF), or sponsor their membership in a professional organization for their chosen media.

8. Organization.

No matter what their medium, artists all have one thing in common: stuff. A gift certificate to The Container Store, session with a professional organizer, or sturdy, portable basket to carry supplies will go a long way toward keeping it all contained.

9. Hand Repair.

Working with chemicals, paints, clay, water, and heat (among other things) really beats up an artist’s main tool: their hands. Artist’s hands are always in need of a little TLC. Instead of buying a simple gift certificate, arrange with a local manicurist to pre-purchase a series of regular restorative manicures for your favorite creative.

10. Time.

Give the artist in your life more time to do what they love by giving them gift certificates for services that take care of ordinary tasks: cleaning, accounting, taxes, errands, grocery shopping, and child care are useful ways to free their time.
