In 2013, San Antonio will be the home of Texas’ only independent college of art, offering a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree.
It will be a new college, but one with nearly 50 years of tradition in teaching visual arts.
It will be in a green space with a long story of historic importance, but in the middle of a vibrant urban downtown.
Most important of all, it will be a place where a small, select group of students can find the support, quality education, and inspiration they need to begin a productive life in the arts.
Statement of Intent
The BFA degree program at the Southwest School of Art is designed to involve students in the process of making as a form of inquiry and discovery, with equal emphasis on content and craft. Students will learn to value both traditional and innovative approaches and to move freely between the creation of one-of-a kind works and applied design.
By learning about the materials and skills employed in 2- and 3-dimensional design and an array of art forms, including: book arts, ceramics, drawing, fibers, metals, painting, papermaking, photography, and printmaking, students will acquire the breadth of knowledge needed to formulate and communicate their ideas. The program will also encourage students to concentrate in one area by their senior year and will prepare them to succeed as working artists.
