BFA Vision

Statement of Intent

The BFA degree program at the Southwest School of Art is designed to involve students in the process of making as a form of inquiry and discovery, with equal emphasis on content and craft.  Students will learn to value both traditional and innovative approaches and to move freely between the creation of one-of-a kind works and applied design.

By learning about the materials and skills employed in 2- and 3-dimensional design and an array of art forms, including: book arts, ceramics, drawing, fibers, metals, painting, papermaking, photography, and printmaking, students will acquire the breadth of knowledge needed to formulate and communicate their ideas.  The program will also encourage students to concentrate in one area by their senior year and will prepare them to succeed as working artists.

A review of the location of other independent colleges of art in the U.S. (those  who are members of the Association of Independent Colleges of  Art and Design) clearly shows the need for such a college in Texas — in fact, in the entire southwest.
