Learn clay handbuilding methods-pinch, slab, and coil built forming techniques and construct cylinders, bowls, and small vessels which then be used for various functions as well as how to use and apply glaze to your final creations.

Gain basic skills of drawing in color using soft pastels. Rendering techniques to build saturated and layered glazing of colors will be covered as well as understanding of color and design principles.

Learn the fundamentals of acrylic painting from sketching the under-painting, mixing and blending of colors, and learn to render forms in paint, gain an understanding of shadow and light, color values, and composition.

Middle School students interested in enhancing their art making skills in a small and focused program will enjoy this 11-week course which will covers art fundamentals and skills in drawing, painting, and other media. This class is a great fit for the student who may not feel artistically inclined, but still wants to know what art is about, have an appreciation for art, as well as have hands-on experience making art projects. Each class will start with an image lecture or video about a broad art related topic; followed by studio time to create projects based on the artwork or topics covered that day. Students should expect to do some light descriptive writing, create multiple art projects, participate in lively discussion, and ultimately become wiser and more enthusiastic art lovers.

This class is perfect for the student who is eager to dive into art by learning time-honored drawing and painting skills. The class focuses on learning to represent the natural world through observation, and on a sequence of skill building exercises. A variety of art materials- from markers and pencils, to oil paints and pastels-will be used. Expect a lot of instruction, and to complete the course with multiple finished artworks, both traditional and experimental.
