While our printmaking studio is exceptionally well-equipped to produce traditional art prints, it is also nationally known for innovations in non-toxic printmaking.  We also incorporate innovative mixed-media techniques into many classes.

 6147 | Cyanotype Prints with Monotype and Mixed Me | FALL SEMESTER

This workshop will introduce participants to the beautiful and easy cyanotype (blueprint) process, using stencils plus monotype and mixed media techniques to make layered and bold images on paper. Review examples of cyanotypes with mixed media additions with the instructor; then learn to coat paper with cyanotype solution (or try commercial pre-coated paper) before exposing and developing prints. After the cyanotypes are dry, enhance with monotype, collage, and drawing techniques. Bring your curiosity and creativity. Includes most materials; see SSA website for a materials list. Please bring a bag lunch.

Beginning level students will try various types of printmaking: relief, monotype, collagraph, and etching. Class instruction will include producing the plate or matrix, printing, and editioning. Intermediate-level students will have the opportunity to explore more advanced projects in etching, relief, lithography, and collagraph. A materials list will be provided at the first class. NOTE: Section A is for experienced printmakers; Section B is open to all levels; and Section C is geared toward beginning printmakers.

In this introductory printmaking class, students will explore color printing using a screenprint stencil. Students will learn how to work with simple paper stencils, watercolor monoprints, screen and experimental overprinting to make engaging one-of-a-kind images. Includes some materials; please see SSA website for a list of materials. No printmaking experience necessary.

 6700 | Etching Decals for Ceramics

Level: New | All Levels | Instructor: Margaret Craig & Jennifer Datchuk

In this class, students will explore how to create metal plate etchings to create traditional decal images that can transfer onto the surface of bone dry clay. Starting in the printmaking studio, students will learn line, soft ground, and simple photographic etching to create decal images. In addition, Craig will cover how to mix special inks that can be printed onto tissue, transferred to clay and fired onto the clay surface. In the ceramic studio, Datchuk will cover basic handbuilding techniques of slab construction, pinch and coil forming and firing work with low-temperature ceramic processes and materials. A materials list will be provided at the first class. PREREQUEST: Some prior art experience recommended. The first class will be held in printmaking.

 6710 | Etching & Basic Metal Skills

In this class, over two weekends, students will have the opportunity to learn skills across departments. The first weekend, students will spend time in the printmaking department learning techniques that printmakers use for etching metals. These include line etching for directly etching lines on a plate, soft ground for creating unusual textures, and photographic etching for precise reproduction of image in metal. During the second weekend, students will learn how to transform their etched metal to create bangles, small lidded boxes, or pendants. Demonstrations will include forming, cold joining, and soldering metal as well as use of the hydraulic press to emboss and form metal. Developing personal expression and style will be emphasized as students work through projects as well as samples, presented and guided by the instructor. For this workshop copper and ferric chloride will be used; techniques will work with other metals and etchants as well. Prerequisite: Some prior art experience. Includes some materials and additional materials are available for purchase; materials will be discussed at the first class. Please see website for *Metals Supplies Note.
