While our printmaking studio is exceptionally well-equipped to produce traditional art prints, it is also nationally known for innovations in non-toxic printmaking.  We also incorporate innovative mixed-media techniques into many classes.

 6027 | Mixed Media: Art Materials Special

Get the most out of your art materials-whether traditional or nontraditional. This is a good class for those working in other disciplines who want to add mixed media to their work. Learn about substrates, including canvas, wood, MDF, and paper. Learn the best ways to build a painting surface. Find out about "mock" lacquer, sanded paint, crackle effects, spray-paint, stencils, special effects, medium combinations, paint-skins, collage, photo transfer, epoxy, and other interesting materials and effects. Materials included and available for experimentation; however, students should bring painting supplies and brushes they may already have. No previous painting experience required, but some art experience expected.

This three-day workshop is designed to prepare the student with everything needed to begin an independent exploration of this fascinating medium. Students will receive a thorough grounding in the basics of encaustic work through demonstrations, hands on materials and extensive handouts. We will address safe studio practices, tools and equipment, and basic approaches to wax painting. Students will explore a variety of media and techniques for adding a mark-making language to their work. Time will be spent in discussing correct storage of encaustic work along with packaging and shipping. Students can expect to take home several small completed paintings. Co-sponsored by R&F Paint, students will receive some medium, paint, and pigment sticks. Please see SSA website for a materials list. This class is open to all levels.

 6107 | Water-Based Screen Printing

Screen printing, also called silkscreen and serigraphy, is a versatile way to create images using a variety of stencils attached to a fine mesh screen. Stencils can be made from cut materials, fluid materials painted directly onto the screen, or produced photographically on the screen with a light sensitive emulsion. This class will include introductory instruction as well as some advanced techniques focusing on the breadth of methods and techniques used to generate printed images. Materials will be discussed the first class. No previous printmaking experience required, but some art and drawing experience helpful.

 6150 | Photo-Lithography

In this workshop, students will combine traditional drawing practices and digital techniques to create a one to two layer print using positive working photo lithographic plates. Similar to screen printing, in photo lithography the image is produced by exposing the positive working plate and drawn or printed films to UV light. When compared to traditional stone lithography, students can expect the same level of detail with less work and exposure to harmful chemicals. Instruction will be given on the preparation of the print matrix as well as registration, printing, and editioning of work. Prerequisite: Some prior printmaking experience required. Includes most materials; additional materials available for purchase during class.

 6152 | Mokuhanga: Japanese Woodblock Printing

Mokuhanga, Japanese style woodcut, is known for its beautiful colors, transparency and fine detail. It uses a wheat paste based watercolor for ink. Brushes are used to apply the ink, and a barren is used for hand printing. In this special workshop, students will learn the method to produce a Japanese style woodblock print. This includes cutting the wood block image, registration, printing, and editioning of the work. Prerequisite: Some prior art experience required. Includes most materials; please see SSA website for materials list. Additional materials available for purchase during class.
