While our printmaking studio is exceptionally well-equipped to produce traditional art prints, it is also nationally known for innovations in non-toxic printmaking.  We also incorporate innovative mixed-media techniques into many classes.

Get the most out of your art materials-whether traditional or nontraditional. This is a good class for those working in other disciplines who want to add mixed media to their work. Learn about substrates, including canvas, wood, MDF, and paper. Learn the best ways to build a painting surface. Find out about "mock" lacquer, sanded paint, crackle effects, spray-paint, stencils, special effects, medium combinations, paint-skins, collage, photo transfer, epoxy, and other interesting materials and effects. Materials included and available for experimentation; however, students should bring painting supplies and brushes they may already have. No previous painting experience required, but some art experience expected.

This three-day workshop is designed to prepare the student with everything needed to begin an independent exploration of this fascinating medium. Students will receive a thorough grounding in the basics of encaustic through demonstrations and hands-on experience as well as extensive handouts. Safe studio practices, tools and equipment, and basic approaches to wax painting will be addressed, and using a sample board students will explore a variety of media and techniques for adding a mark-making language to their work. Students can expect to take home several small completed paintings, a technique sample board, and a larger 10 x 10-inch completed work. Co-sponsored by R&F Paint; students will receive sample materials. Please bring a bag lunch and see the SSA website for a list of materials.

The combination of photo etching with traditional etching techniques can produce compelling results. Working with a digital image, participants will learn the steps on the computer in Photoshop® or Xerox machine to produce transparencies for high-quality photo etchings. Students will then learn the process of etching the transparent image into a copper plate. Traditional techniques of line etch, aquatint, and soft ground can then be added to the plate for unique results. Some printmaking experience helpful, but not required. Includes most materials but see materials list for more info on source materials.

Monotypes are a spontaneous way to create one-of-a-kind, painterly prints. Using fabric, stencils, additive, and reductive painting methods, students will produce monotype prints. Over the course of the workshop, students will also work directly from still-lifes. Please bring reference materials, sketches, and various sized brushes. All materials included, please bring a bag lunch.

 6148 | Relief Printmaking Workshop

This course will introduce students to the graphic aspect of woodcut printing combined with the painterly effects of monotype. Working with acrylic plates and watercolors, students will create a colorful base layer for their print; bold woodcuts then will be printed on top of the monotype. Learn how to translate an image to a block, carve images by hand using traditional tools, electric tools, and handmade tools, apply oil-based ink with rollers, and print by hand as well as on the press. Examples of woodblock prints by contemporary artists will also be covered as well as methods for print registration, paper tearing, proofing, and editioning. Bring source materials for inspiration and a bag lunch.

The printing process of lithography allows the artist to produce an image close to that of a drawing. It is a process based on the incompatibility of water and oil, relying on chemistry to make the print work. During this course, students will learn the process for drawing and painting onto limestone printing plate to producing prints on a lithography press. Demonstrations will include stone preparation, processing, paper handling, ink mixing, registration, and printing. Previous printmaking experience helpful but not required.
