Get your feet wet in this introductory class and explore what handmade paper is all about. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the papermaking process from breaking down fibers to creating paper pulp, adding color to the paper pulp, and using stencils and vails to create paper samples to take home. Combine with a bookbinding class and learn to incorporate your handmade papers into book covers or pages.

This course will teach students how to take paper pulp and form a sheet of paper, then using pigmented paper pulp layer colors over the formed sheet and/or add collage elements and texture to the sheet as well. Students will be instructed how the decorated sheet can then be wrapped onto a canvas where it will dry and become a piece of wall art. Includes materials; however, see SSA website for a list of optional supplies.

This two-day workshop covers a variety of binding structures made without the use of adhesives. From simple folios to pamphlet stitched books, students will rely on folding, cutting, and stitching to create simple and elegant structures. Discover how to adapt a basic design to fit your ideas and create versatile books. Students will finish with a sample of different types of bindings; a great course for educators looking to incorporate book structures into their class curriculum. No binding experience is required. How to Register

 Step 1

If registering during Member's Priority registration, login to the website with your username and password (open registration does not require you to be logged in). To find classes, visit the Adult Class pages to read class descriptions.

 Step 2

Click the Department Class Type (ex. Ceramics)

 Step 3

Click the “Register Now” button. Note: Each area of concentration will have separate registration forms.

 Step 4

Choose your class by clicking the box to the left of the class name. Scroll to the bottom of the page to click Continue and complete the student information form. Once this form is submitted, you will receive a final e-mail with confirmation of your registration.
