Fundamental handbuilding skills and techniques will be covered including pinch pots, coil building, and slab construction with a focus on fun, artful, and utilitarian forms as well as surface techniques to add decorative elements to make the work truly one-of-a-kind. Students will undertake a variety of intermediate/advanced projects that incorporate slab construction, coil construction, and advanced surface techniques. The class will work in low-temperature firing and students will learn how to use materials for the purpose of handbuilding and decorating sculptural work. Prerequisite: Students must have completed a minimum of one introduction to handbuilding course. Tuition covers glaze materials and kiln firing; however, students should anticipate additional fees for clay, specific glazes, and some tools. *See Ceramic Note.

Create dynamic ceramic shapes using thrown forms as the foundation for adding and subtracting to manipulate the volume. By cutting, darting, paddling, or adding hand-built components, explore turning a simple cylinder into a myriad of vessel or sculptural forms; the relationship between form and function will also be considered. *See Ceramic Note. Prerequisite: Students must have had a minimum of two intermediate level throwing classes and feel confident in throwing the forms listed above.

 Step 1

If registering during Member's Priority registration, login to the website with your username and password (open registration does not require you to be logged in). To find classes, visit the Adult Class pages to read class descriptions.

 Step 2

Click the Department Class Type (ex. Ceramics)

 Step 3

Click the “Register Now” button. Note: Each area of concentration will have separate registration forms.

 Step 4

Choose your class by clicking the box to the left of the class name. Scroll to the bottom of the page to click Continue and complete the student information form. Once this form is submitted, you will receive a final e-mail with confirmation of your registration.
