In this follow up course to Basic Skills.1, students will hone their sawing, soldering, forming, and surface finishing skills and apply those basic metalsmithing techniques to create more complex projects. Demonstrations will include how to etch a pattern or texture into metal, how to create a bezel for stone setting, and how to make jump rings and chains to complete a wearable object.

This course focuses on how to create volumetric pieces using forming and how to use enameling to add color, texture, and pattern to jewelry and small-scale objects. Students will explore fold-forming to create earrings or pendants and sinking to create a small metal bowl. Then using vitreous enamels, students will learn how to apply color and texture to these pieces.

During this weekend class, students will learn how to make jewelry using PMC3, a fine silver clay. The class will be full of tips and techniques on how to work with metal clay, including how to create textures and stencils to make jewelry more unique and personal. Anticipate additional discussions about tools, materials, hand sculpting, carving, and much, much more!

Thursday October 7

This class will focus on learning the fundamentals and basics of Bronzclay™. Students will learn how to roll and shape the metal clay, how to use different tools to carve it and add texture, as well as surface finishing while creating one-of-a-kind works in these materials. Kiln use and firing the finished dry clay pieces will be reviewed to provide full understanding of the firing of metal clay.

Design and create bangles and charms out of silver, brass, and/or copper in this fun 4-week class. Students will form metal bracelets while learning basic metal skills-soldering with a torch, texturing with hammers, and using metal stamps to create decorative charms. Students can expect to complete several bracelets that could make perfect holiday gifts.

What does it take to make a ring? Construction of handmade rings will be the focus of this two-day workshop. Students will learn about the basic techniques of working with non-ferrous metals (copper, brass, and silver), basic hand tools, forging, forming, silver-soldering, surface embellishment, and finishing techniques. In two days, students should expect to walk away with at least two finished projects.

How to Register

 Step 1

If registering during Member's Priority registration, login to the website with your username and password (open registration does not require you to be logged in). To find classes, visit the Adult Class pages to read class descriptions.

 Step 2

Click the Department Class Type (ex. Ceramics)

 Step 3

Click the “Register Now” button. Note: Each area of concentration will have separate registration forms.

 Step 4

Choose your class by clicking the box to the left of the class name. Scroll to the bottom of the page to click Continue and complete the student information form. Once this form is submitted, you will receive a final e-mail with confirmation of your registration. .
