Southwest School of Art offers a wide array of classes, at all skill levels, in oils, acrylics and watercolors. Composition, technique, style and conceptual vigor are typically covered in every class – with creative experimentation encouraged along the way.

Color Design is a three-day in-depth exploration of color theory and color interaction. This course considers color as a descriptive and expressive element of art, emphasizing color perception and application. Investigations of 2-dimensional design problems and the formal, technical, creative and psychological aspects of color usage will be introduced and emphasized. This is a basic course essential for understanding how to use color and apply it effectively in all areas of art. Basic Design 1 helpful but not required. This weekend workshop will introduce you to the energetic qualities of pastels at your own fingertips. Pastels offer a unique means of building saturated and layered colors. Utilizing a live model, the instructor will give a demonstration and then guide you into a study of value and color to produce one expressive and vibrant pastel painting. Individual attention will be given to both the beginner and those with more pastel drawing experience. Includes model fee; please see SSA website for a materials list.

This is a course for artists working in all media who want to explore a more self-directed practice. Like an open studio with a classroom environment, artists can finish started projects, start new ones, or push themselves in new directions. Instruction will be tailored to each individual student, with as much feedback as desired. The instructor will help students finish what they've already started, get from idea to completion, bridge skill and concept, (re)discover individual creative interests, or recover from artist's block. Prerequisite: Previous art-making experience. Bring a blank canvas, sketch-pad, a work in progress, images or a sample of finished work, and supplies you currently use to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time.

This course is geared to empower artists with the many possible creative approaches used in abstract expression. Working with acrylic medium on paper or canvas, as well as mixed media applications, the course will concentrate on color relationships and gradations to provide a foundation for abstract exploration. In addition, compositional resource will be explored through geometric design, texture, pattern, and line. Prerequisite: Prior painting experience required. Cartooning, or visual storytelling, is more than just an enjoyable indulgence of the imagination; it speaks to interests such as editorial illustration, children's book illustration, comic strips, comic books and storyboarding. Its various forms combine caricature, figure drawing and illustration through the medium of ink and watercolor on paper. Instruction will focus on character development, illusions of movement, sequential staging, setting management, inking, and coloring?all aimed towards the refinement of the student's narratives and ideas. Bring a 9 by 12-inch sketchbook and a sharpened pencil to the first class. No class Jul 4.

Working from photographs and plein air (outdoor) sketching, students will learn basic landscape principles. Students can explore different grounds and painting media as well as mixed media applications, and study stylistic examples of artists who have worked within these methods. Painting methods and various working approaches will be demonstrated and encouraged. Required materials will be discussed at the first class.
