Southwest School of Art offers a wide array of classes, at all skill levels, in oils, acrylics and watercolors. Composition, technique, style and conceptual vigor are typically covered in every class – with creative experimentation encouraged along the way.

Want to start painting but don't know where to start? Get a step-by-step introduction to painting with water-based mediums of watercolor and gouache through demonstration and hands-on practice. Let this non-judgmental introductory class jumpstart a new creative direction. All supplies will be provided or you may bring your own; please bring a bag lunch.

Color Design is an in-depth exploration of color theory, color interaction, and design principles. This course considers color as a descriptive and expressive element of art, emphasizing color perception and application. Investigations of 2-dimensional design problems and the formal, technical, creative, and psychological aspects of color usage will be introduced and emphasized. This is a basic course essential for understanding how to use color and apply it effectively in all areas of art.

Painting is an ideal class for the beginning student who wants a structured approach to painting or for the intermediate student who wants one-on-one instruction. The class will cover color mixing, paint application, selection and use of brushes and other painting tools, as well as painting composition. You will use a limited color palette in order to learn how to mix a variety of colors. Bring a sketchbook; a materials list will be discussed at the first class. There are no prerequisites; however, Drawing Basics is recommended. Note: Sections A and B work with acrylics, Section C works with oils.

This workshop in pastels will introduce you to the energetic qualities of pastels at your own fingertips. Utilizing a live model, the instructor will give a demonstration and then guide you into a study of value and color to produce one expressive and vibrant pastel painting. This is a course for artists working in all media who want to explore a more self-directed practice. Like an open studio with a classroom environment, artists can finish started projects, start new ones, or push themselves in new directions. Instruction will be tailored to each individual student, with as much feedback as desired. Instruction can help you finish what you've already started, get from idea to completion, bridge skill and concept, (re)discover individual creative interests, or recover from artist's block. Prerequisite: Previous studio experience. Bring images or a sample of finished work and/or a work in progress, as well as supplies you currently are using to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time.

Working from photographs and plein air (outdoor) sketching, learn basic landscape principles. You can explore different grounds and painting media as well as mixed media applications, and study stylistic examples of artists who have worked within these methods. Painting methods and various working approaches will be demonstrated and encouraged. Required materials will be discussed at the first class. Previous drawing or painting experience recommended, but not required.

This course will explore the fundamental principles of learning how to depict the figure in oil paint, including painting tools, creating flesh colors, composition, painting details of the figure, lighting, and producing contrast and shadows. This course will focus on painting from the live model. Bring a blank canvas or a work in progress, and painting supplies you currently use to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time.
