Southwest School of Art offers a wide array of classes, at all skill levels, in oils, acrylics and watercolors. Composition, technique, style and conceptual vigor are typically covered in every class – with creative experimentation encouraged along the way.

Register for this class on the Printmaking page found here.This three-day workshop is designed to prepare the student with everything needed to begin an independent exploration of this fascinating medium. Students will receive a thorough grounding in the basics of encaustic through demonstrations and hands-on experience as well as extensive handouts. Safe studio practices, tools and equipment, and basic approaches to wax painting will be addressed, and using a sample board students will explore a variety of media and techniques for adding a mark-making language to their work. Students can expect to take home several small completed paintings, a technique sample board, and a larger 10 x 10-inch completed work. Co-sponsored by R&F Paint; students will receive sample materials. Please bring a bag lunch and see the SSA website for a list of materials.

Color Design is a three-day in-depth exploration of color theory and color interaction. This course considers color as a descriptive and expressive element of art, emphasizing color perception and application. Investigations of two-dimensional design problems and the formal, technical, creative, and psychological aspects of color usage will be introduced and emphasized. This is a basic course essential for understanding how to use color and apply it effectively in all areas of art. Basic Design 1 helpful but not required. Students will use a limited color palette in order to learn how to mix a variety of colors. Bring a sketchbook; a materials list will be discussed at the first class. There are no prerequisites; however, Basic Drawing is recommended. Note: Students may work in either oil or acrylic.

Explore various approaches to interpreting the landscape plein air style in the Texas Hill Country. Spend the weekend drawing and/or painting (in water-based media) with focus on developing a personal style while improving composition and technique. Various methods of rendering from observation will be covered. Previous drawing or painting experience recommended, but not required. Participants may have the option to spend the weekend in the area as well as pre-ordering a gourmet meal through arrangements with the instructor.  8019 | Intermediate Watercolor

This watercolor course will employ a unique approach to intermediate and advanced techniques. Creative self-expression and a design mindset will be encouraged; color theory and methods for applying paint will be explored, as will gouache and other materials/methods will be introduced as a minor element. Step-by-step demos, along with individual and group critiques, will be regular conduits for learning. Students will work from still life, imagination, or photographs. Bring painting supplies currently in use; additional materials will be discussed the first class. Prerequisite: Previous watercolor painting experience required.

 8020 | Expressive Drawing with Charcoal

Tap into the expressive potential of the charcoal drawing medium. This six-week course will cover charcoal materials and methods applied to a diverse subject matter. A variety of mark making and tonal techniques emphasizing illusions of line movement, light, shadow, and space will be emphasized in still-life, landscape, architectural interiors, and figurative subjects. Studio and independent projects will be assigned, along with weekly instructor and peer group feedback. Bring some charcoal, a kneaded eraser, and drawing pad to the first session. Bring a blank canvas or a work in progress, images or a sample of finished work, and painting supplies you currently use to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time. This course is geared to empower artists with the many possible creative approaches used in abstract expression. Working with acrylic medium on paper or canvas, as well as mixed media applications, the course will concentrate on color relationships and gradations to provide a foundation for abstract exploration. In addition, compositional resource will be explored through geometric design, texture, pattern, and line. Prerequisite: Prior painting experience required. Cartooning, or visual storytelling, is more than just an enjoyable indulgence of the imagination; it speaks to interests such as editorial illustration, children's book illustration, comic strips, comic books, and storyboarding. Its various forms combine caricature, figure drawing, and illustration through the medium of ink and watercolor on paper. Instruction will focus on character development, illusions of movement, sequential staging, setting management, inking, and coloring?all aimed towards the refinement of the student's narratives and ideas. Bring a 9 by 12-inch sketchbook and a sharpened pencil to the first class.
