Papermaking

At Southwest School of Art, we celebrate the fact that contemporary papermakers and book arts practitioners blend centuries old tradition with modern innovation -- which means that you may find arcane bookbinding alongside pulp painting, or handset letterpress printing next to paper-based sculptural installations.

Papermaking Note:

Because papermaking is a wet process, students working in the papermaking studio must wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet. Water-proof aprons are available.

The Japanese tradition of kusakizome-gami, naturally dyed paper, extends back over a millennium. The bright and subtle colors derived from plant materials are safe and pleasant to work with and harmonize well with natural fibers. Historically used not only for their beauty but also practical purposes ranging from insect repellents to waterproofing, these dyed papers have numerous applications for book arts too. Learn to prepare dyestuffs from a number of plant materials, how to size and treat papers, how to dip, brush, resist dye, and understand the effects of different mordants. Students are encouraged to experiment with their own papers as well as Japanese kozo. See SSA website for a materials list. Please register by Oct 26.
