Papermaking

At Southwest School of Art, we celebrate the fact that contemporary papermakers and book arts practitioners blend centuries old tradition with modern innovation -- which means that you may find arcane bookbinding alongside pulp painting, or handset letterpress printing next to paper-based sculptural installations.

Papermaking Note:

Because papermaking is a wet process, students working in the papermaking studio must wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet. Water-proof aprons are available.

4021 | Structural Composition: Exploring Abaca Fibers

Level: New | All Levels | Instructor: Ingrid Tegnér
Dates: Sat & Sun, 10/12/2019 to 10/13/2019 | 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM
Studio: Picante Paper Studio | Building: Santikos Building

Come learn about the structural potential of highly beaten abaca in this two-day course. Students will learn to pull sheets of paper and have the opportunity to embed other materials between the sheets of wet paper. As the paper is left to air dry, the embedded objects provide resistance to the shrinking abaca creating three-dimensional forms. This is a class for exploration and experimentation. All materials will be provided. Play with the forms you expect and see the new forms that surprise you depending on the materials embedded. All materials provided; please bring a bag lunch.
