Papermaking

At Southwest School of Art, we celebrate the fact that contemporary papermakers and book arts practitioners blend centuries old tradition with modern innovation -- which means that you may find arcane bookbinding alongside pulp painting, or handset letterpress printing next to paper-based sculptural installations.

Papermaking Note:

Because papermaking is a wet process, students working in the papermaking studio must wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet. Water-proof aprons are available.

There are two words that can describe the papermaking process-fascinating and complicated. Paper products are fundamental to our everyday lives, but how often do we actually think about how they are made and what they are made from? While learning the art of papermaking, students in this class will recycle old clothing to create paper and then how add seeds to make their art into something that can be planted. The planted paper eventually dissipates and the seeds sprout, putting more life into this world. Explore creating paper from other materials that have been discarded to gain the knowledge and understanding of the papermaking process, step-by-step, and how the process differs based on the materials used. Please see SSA website for the materials list. See *PAPERMAKING NOTE.
