Papermaking

At Southwest School of Art, we celebrate the fact that contemporary papermakers and book arts practitioners blend centuries old tradition with modern innovation -- which means that you may find arcane bookbinding alongside pulp painting, or handset letterpress printing next to paper-based sculptural installations.

Papermaking Note:

Because papermaking is a wet process, students working in the papermaking studio must wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet. Water-proof aprons are available.

Handmade paper is a wonderful and lightweight material for use in creating low-relief and three-dimensional objects. In this workshop, we will explore how to embed string, wire, and other stiff yet flexible materials between sheets of handmade abaca paper. When dry, the sheets can be manipulated into forms ranging from lamps and lanterns to sculptural objects. Experiment with glue, thread, wire and other fasteners to create unique dimensional pieces. Please see SSA website for the materials list. See *PAPERMAKING NOTE. Please register by Oct. 6th.

Studio: Book Arts Studio | Building: Santikos Building
Tuition: $260.00 | Members/Seniors (65+): $245.00

This workshop will explore the potential of paper and prints as objects, not just as carriers of imagery. Special attention will be paid to the qualities and actions that marry the act of printing to the material of paper. The class will go into detail about different types of paper, both eastern and western, as well as ways of handling uncommon substrates like veneer, tyvek, or cloth. Letterpress printing from unconventional materials like wood, paper, and found objects will also be discussed and practiced by turning the perfect material into a press-ready matrix. Students should come prepared to print with an open mind and intent to be prolific. Expect to go home with an unbound portfolio of prints from our exploratory matrices. Please see SSA website for the materials list. Please register by Sept. 15th.
