Papermaking

At Southwest School of Art, we celebrate the fact that contemporary papermakers and book arts practitioners blend centuries old tradition with modern innovation -- which means that you may find arcane bookbinding alongside pulp painting, or handset letterpress printing next to paper-based sculptural installations.

Papermaking Note:

Because papermaking is a wet process, students working in the papermaking studio must wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet. Water-proof aprons are available.

Paper is normally considered as a 2-D art form-as a substrate for other artistic practices-yet handmade paper possesses the unique qualities for use in sculptural applications. We will be exploring paper that is tough, leathery, flexible, and transparent, that shrinks and holds irregular shapes, all qualities that open a world of sculptural possibilities. Students will learn lamination techniques, armatures, and how to work with high shrinkage fibers to be able to explore their own designs. This class is open to anybody interested in hand papermaking and/or sculpture in general. Includes most materials; please see SSA website for a list of suggested supplies.
