At Southwest School of Art, we have an exceptional facility for teaching traditional and non-traditional imaging. Students receive a solid technical foundation in photography, combined with opportunities to learn innovative techniques, both historical and digital.

 5000 | Darkroom Studio Rental

The Lende Photography Studios are completely equipped photographic workspaces available to experienced photographers. The equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis, with photography classes and full-term students given priority The fee includes access to the darkroom, traditional black and white chemistry, and dry workspaces; renters are responsible all cleanup. Prerequisite: Must have taken a prior darkroom photography classes or equivalent experience. Before enrolling, students need to contact Department Chair Joe Harjo at jharjo@swschool.org.

Make your photographs more dynamic by using simple techniques and compositional tools. Learn basic creative control of your manual 35mm film or digital SLR camera as well as focal lengths, composition arrangement, camera angles, creative camera controls, and other strategies for making successful photographs. The instructor will work with you individually to solve specific problems.

Learn about black & white film developing and printing, dodging and burning of prints, toning, print retouching, and print finishing. Essential elements of camera handling, metering, lens accessories, camera accessories, and composition issues will be explained and demonstrated. Intermediate-level photographers will be encouraged to achieve better mastery over their equipment, materials, and printing skills.

This class is about the creative process of art making and not the specific to any medium. Perception and creativity are the cornerstones of an artistic style. It is the interpretation and visualization of the subject that moves artwork from ordinary to extraordinary. Focus on refining your artistic vision to create unique artwork that communicates to others with emotional resonance. Sharpen your personal artistic vision or visual understanding through assignments, exercises, gallery visits, and concrete constructive critiques.

Explore the creative possibilities available using Adobe Creative Suite® for artistic purposes. Hands-on training with basic drawing/painting, word processing, electronic imaging, vector-based graphics, and desktop publishing application will be covered. Assigned projects will explore how to apply art, design, and computer knowledge in solving visual and conceptual problems. Adobe Creative Suite® includes Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.  5090 | Cyanotype on Fabric

Learn the process for creating cyanotypes on fabric. Cyanotypes, a fun photographic printmaking process that uses the sun to develop images resulting in a vibrant deep cyan-blue finished print. The technique dates from the late 1800s and was first used to create blueprints for architecture, then used artistically by Anna Atkins to create the first photograms. Create your own printing plates using digital photo negatives, cut paper, found botanicals, crayon and ink. Students will work in the dark room, the studios and outside to create dynamic prints. The second day, students will work collaboratively to create and print a large cyanotype mural. Includes some materials: please see SSA website for a materials list.

Find yourself taking more and more pictures with a phone on a daily basis? Learn from a photographer whose practice includes photographing regularly with a iPhone. This short workshop can help improve the digital photos the phone captures. Students will learn the various camera functions of their iPhone, and will practice shooting during in-class exercises.

 5202 | Photoshop 101: Essential Basics

Through structured hands-on instructor-led training expand your skills in pixel-based photography and turn up the quality of your photographs through digital enhancement. Learn the fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop® starting with the software interface and moving on to the foundational tools used in most projects. see materials list.

 

How to Register

 Step 1

If registering during Member's Priority registration, login to the website with your username and password (open registration does not require you to be logged in). To find classes, visit the Adult Class pages to read class descriptions.

 Step 2

Click the Department Class Type (ex. Ceramics)

 Step 3

Click the “Register Now” button. Note: Each area of concentration will have separate registration forms.

 Step 4

Choose your class by clicking the box to the left of the class name. Scroll to the bottom of the page to click Continue and complete the student information form. Once this form is submitted, you will receive a final e-mail with confirmation of your registration. .
