Explore the ancient art form of glass beadmaking utilizing open flamework techniques. Students will work with a "hot head" torch and soft glass as they learn the process of forming various types of beads, including donut beads, cylinder beads, textured beads, round beads, and half and half beads. Decorative additions such as dots, stringers, and colored frits will also be covered, as well as safety procedures and studio set-up.

This class is for individuals that have previous experience welding but want time to hone skills, explore processes, and work on individual projects. Through practice students will learn optimal welding setting required, based on the materials being welded, to acquire an adequate welding bond. Students will also work on advanced projects from hinges, levelers, modular methods, and bending with stock materials. The class will also dig into calculating steel strength.

Using low-tech forging setups, you will construct a single edge blade, through tang knife with a forged guard. Advance forging techniques will be covered and will address keeping overall grinding of the blade to a minimum. Learn how to construct a handle using natural and manmade materials.

This course is designed to take you through the seven basic elements of blacksmithing incorporating those techniques into one finished piece, as well as understanding the ergonomics of forging. From these seven, you can branch out to more complicated forms of metalworking. Relying almost entirely on hand tools-using a forge, anvil, and hammer-create something both of form and function such as a bottle opener, door pulls, trivet, or wall hook.

Irregular classes scheduled ending Saturday October 23
Learn to cut dovetail, and mortise and tenon joints by hand. Using a simple project, students will build a step stool while learning to the use of hand saws, chisels, hand planes, and a variety of marking tools to lay out, cut, fit, and finish wooden joints. You will walk away from this class with a finished project as well as the necessary skills to cut a wide variety of common woodworking joints.

How to Register

 Step 1

If registering during Member's Priority registration, login to the website with your username and password (open registration does not require you to be logged in). To find classes, visit the Adult Class pages to read class descriptions.

 Step 2

Click the Department Class Type (ex. Ceramics)

 Step 3

Click the “Register Now” button. Note: Each area of concentration will have separate registration forms.

 Step 4

Choose your class by clicking the box to the left of the class name. Scroll to the bottom of the page to click Continue and complete the student information form. Once this form is submitted, you will receive a final e-mail with confirmation of your registration. .
