Southwest School of Art’s Adult Studio Program offers study abroad opportunities that expand the student's learning potential and experience. The program allows for cultural immersion outside of the classroom environment. Enrollment in study abroad classes is open to anyone 18 years or older.

Study Abroad Course Descriptions

 1130 | China: Jingdezhen Pottery Workshop

Level: Study Abroad | Special Class | All Levels | Instructor: Jennifer Ling Datchuk
Dates: 5/6/2019 to 5/25/2019
Location: Jingdezhen, China
Tuition: $1,800.00

Spend three weeks living and working in Jingdezhen, China-the Porcelain Capital of the World. During the three weeks, a series of workshops provided by local ceramic artisans will run Monday - Saturday as well as a day field trips to craftsman studios and production facilities and a museum trip are also included. Topics include blue and white decoration, carving, on-glaze painting, and wheel throwing with Chinese porcelain. The tuition fee covers workshop instruction, accommodations (double-occupancy) and meals (on workshop days). Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements (round-trip air fare to China and travel to Jingdezhen), visa and fees, immunizations (check CDC site for recommended health guidelines), travel insurance (required), materials, and Sunday meals. Students should allow additional days for travel from the U.S to China (via Beijing or Shanghai) and then to Jingdezhen.

 2900 | Textile Studio Workshop in Oaxaca

Dates: 8/3/2019 to 8/13/2019
Location: Oaxaca, Mexico
Tuition: $2,200.00 

Through 10 days of interactive studio visits, workshops, and immersion in the daily lives of textile artist Porfirio Gutierrz and his family, students will come closer to Zapotec history, culture, and contemporary daily life. Learn natural dye techniques with native plants and insects, weave on traditional floor looms, and visit other artisan studios. Woven in, this immersion will include day trips to significant archaeological sites and museums in the area, as well as assisting with meal prep-all and all to give students an understanding of how the past and the present are intertwined in modern day Zapotec culture. Cost includes: workshops and materials, transportation and entry fees, interpreters and guides, housing (double occupancy), and meals while at the studio. Students can anticipate additional expenses for airfare, travel insurance, day trip meals and beverages, individual excursions during free time, and personal purchases.

Be sure to read the descriptions before selecting your class(es). Note: Each area of concentration will have separate registration forms. If you're registering for more than one area of concentration, please follow the prompts shown in the registration form.

Complete your payment information. Once your credit card payment is submitted, you will receive a e-mail with confirmation of your registration.
