 Teaching Proposal - Community Programs

Artists interested in teaching a class or workshop in the community school at  Southwest School of Art are encouraged to send a proposal and their credentials to our attention.  All proposals will be thoughtfully considered.

In selecting teachers and courses, some of the things we look for include:

  • How well the proposed course fulfills the mission of Southwest School of Art
  • The teacher’s reputation as an artist
  • Previous teaching experience
  • The logistics of the proposed course with regard to facilities and materials
  • Schedule availability
  • The potential of the proposed course to attract students

Volunteer Opportunities

 Industry Professionals Wanted

The Kids Initiating Design Solution (KIDS) architecture in schools program is a collaborative
architecture-based program in which elementary students learn to reexamine their environment
and rediscover the built world around them. Through the exploration of art and architecture,
students relate concepts and ideas to lessons being taught inside the classroom. The KIDS
curriculum provides all types of learners access to information through multiple entry points
ranging from reading/written projects to creative kinetic activities.

The program consists of ten 90-minute lessons lead by a teaching team of an artist instructor,
industry professional, and the classroom teacher. Classes meet once a week. Volunteers for both fall and spring semesters are needed!

Industry professionals that volunteer for this program will:

  • Lead visual presentations engaging students in discussion
  • Make real world connections to program curriculum by sharing personal experiences
    relative to art and architecture
  • Encourage creativity, offer support, and challenge students throughout their creative
    process
  • Encourage students to use key art and architecture vocabulary
  • Assist students in constructing individual and group projects
  • Educate students about career paths in the fields of art, design, and architecture
Inspire students to explore, create, and innovate

To ensure the safety of our students and teaching teams, we are requiring that all our participants
provide proof of vaccination and will be required to wear a mask while inside the classroom.
Students will also be required to wear a mask while indoors.

Programs Coordinator Ramon Muñoz at rmunoz@swschool.org.
