When you and your child choose the Southwest School of Art for a college education, you are choosing a highly respected institution. We have a 50-year history of success in teaching visual arts, an uncommon dedication to quality, and a reputation for igniting the creative spark in each student.
Many of our community students are now working artists, happy in their careers and productive members of our community — be they teachers, designers, small business owners, or practicing artists.
The BFA curriculum assures that your child will graduate with a thorough liberal arts education to support his or her passion for the arts. They will work with a nationally-recognized faculty in outstanding studio facilities. As San Antonio’s Mayor Julian Castro recently said: “This school will educate artistically talented students for future success.” In short, our graduates will create their future, SSA’s future, and the future of whatever communities in which they ultimately reside.
Here are some of the most frequent questions we receive from parents:
What will the tuition be?
What financial aid options will there be?
SSA has budgeted for a substantial amount of scholarship and institutional aid dollars during its first four years. Federal financial aid is not available at this time.
What kind of careers will SSA graduates be equipped for?
We want our graduates to be working artists. Many may want to explore options such as public art commissions, teaching, graduate school, or contributing to the many design fields. SSA will prepare them with the general education and business skills they need for success. Each student will be required to complete an internship during his or her course of study. The internship will provide real-world experience in art or arts-related fields so that students might clearly chart their options. We are committed to working with each student individually to steer him or her toward opportunities post-graduation. See a more complete list of careers in the arts here.
What about security and safety?
We take this concern very seriously. Our Chief of Public Safety and his staff work to ensure the safety of our students and the SSA community. Designated student parking is monitored, and both campuses are regularly patrolled by trained officers. Our studios are also secured and monitored for safety.
