Ceramics Independent STUDY Proposal
Independent Study is designed for students who have had three or more years of ceramic study. Students who are self-motivated, technically capable of firing kilns, and who wish to create a body of work during this session may apply. Those considering Independent Study should be aware that this class is offered as an opportunity for the student to focus, taking their own work to a new level in both concept and technique.
Prior to registering, students need to submit their proposal clearly stating the intent of their independent study. This proposal should describe the concept of the work (where the work will begin and what they hope to accomplish). Please state the technical processes required for completion of work. Additionally, please state which temperature range you will be working in (Example: cone 04, cone 6 electric kilns or cone 10, Raku gas kilns). Kiln firings will be grouped amongst your classmates firing temperature. If you select cone 10 or Raku, you need to know how to fire and will be trained accordingly. All bench glazes are available for student use. Independent Study students can mix individual glazes within reason. Please attach your glaze recipes if you intend to mix glazes during your study. Glazes requiring special chemicals may incur additional fees. Other materials such as plaster and casting slip may also require additional fees.
Note: Permission by the Department Chair prior to enrollment is necessary for admission to any Independent Study class. The Department Chair reserves the right to reject proposals that do not concur with the purpose of Independent Study or such proposals that the Ceramic Studio may not be able to accommodate.
Prerequisite: All participants are required to possess the knowledge and the time to load, fire, and unload the kilns that are required in their proposal. Those unable to meet this firing requirement should not enroll in this class.
