Book Arts

The Paper and Book Arts Department offers both traditional and explorative classes at all levels in papermaking, bookbinding, decorative paper techniques and letterpress printing. Papermaking and Book Arts classes are held in the Picante Paper and Book Arts Studios located on the second floor of the Santikos Building.

4106 | Box Making
Explore how to make handmade boxes to house books, prints, photographs and more. Combine decorative papers and book cloth to construct a unique one-of-a-kind box. Learn how to measure and cut boards accurately to construct first a simple clamshell box, as well as a box with divided compartments. In addition, learn the technique for creating marbled paper to use as box lining. No previous experience is necessary.

4309 | Intermediate Letterpress: Multi-Color Print
A letterpress class for students with prior letterpress experience looking to challenge themselves with multicolor printing. The focus will be on practicing tight registration and achieving a well-executed multi-color print. Students will have access to both lead type and polymer plates. NOTE: Good manual dexterity is essential for this class. Please see SSA website for a materials list.

4350 | Holiday Cards
Learn the basics of letterpress printing while making a set of handmade cards inspired by the holiday season. Students will learn to hand-set type and will also have access to polymer plates if they would like to print their own custom designs. The entire letterpress process will be covered and students will leave with a set of cards that are finished, folded, and ready to mail. Printing extra cards will be encouraged so that classmates can trade their work at the end of the course! Sign up for 4002 | Introduction to Papermaking: Winter Edition and create specific holiday paper to print on. NOTE: Good manual dexterity is essential for this class. 4400a | Book Arts Studio Rental: Daily
The Book Arts Studio is available for artists with previous bookbinding experience. Equipment includes standing press, finishing press, plough, sewing punch, stamper, and large Kutrimmer for cutting paper and board, and does not include use of the letterpress equipment. Requests for instruction should be made prior to enrollment and may require an additional fee. Note: The fee includes access to equipment and a limited amount of material. Participants are responsible for all clean up. The studio is available on a first-come, first-served basis, according to Santikos building hours and studio schedule, with classes given priority. Prerequisite: Experience with the desired equipment, understanding of studio protocol, permission from the Department Chair, and approval for each piece of equipment used. Studio rental is available for artists with experience in letterpress printing and equipment. Equipment includes a Vandercook Universal III and a smaller proofing press, standing press, finishing press, plough, sewing punch, stamper, and large Kutrimmer for cutting paper and board. Requests for instruction should be made prior to enrollment and will require an additional fee. Note: The fee includes access to equipment and a limited amount of material. A $100 deposit is required; deposit checks will be returned after confirmation that the press has been properly cleaned, that no equipment has been damaged, and that all type has been properly redistributed. Participants are responsible for all clean up. The studio is available on a first-come, first-served basis, according to Santikos building hours and studio schedule, with classes given priority. Prerequisite: Experience with the desired equipment, understanding of studio protocol, permission from the Department Chair, and approval for each piece of equipment used.
