Book Arts

The Paper and Book Arts Department offers both traditional and explorative classes at all levels in papermaking, bookbinding, decorative paper techniques and letterpress printing. Papermaking and Book Arts classes are held in the Picante Paper and Book Arts Studios located on the second floor of the Navarro Campus.

4110 | Book Structures
The class will cover the basics of book binding techniques and materials, such as types of paper, how to cut and fold paper, sewing signatures and gluing fabric covers. Starting with simple pamphlet binding we will build folding and binding skills, leading up to a case binding structure. The instructor will work help individual students with specific projects as much as possible within the scope of the course. This class consists of demonstrations and work sessions; handouts will be provided. NOTE: Manual dexterity is required in this course. Please see SSA website for a materials list.

4308 | Letterpress Skills
Letterpress celebrates the tactile beauty of the printed word, as the letters are pressed deep into the paper and not just printed upon, but embossed into, the page. Focus will be on good technique and covers polymer plate making, two-color printing, design of text and image, and troubleshooting. Students may bring ideas for the subject and format of their print work, including images, or choose from some suggested projects. This course requires preparation outside of class to complete projects; studio access is available outside of class. Binding and any other relevant techniques will be taught as necessary. Materials and tools needed for individual projects will be discussed in class. A $100 check deposit for type distribution is required from anyone using type and will be returned at the end of class. No printing or binding experience is required. (No class Mar 9)

4350 | Letterpress Cards
$50 @ 50 | SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY CLASS
In Letterpress Cards, students will be shown basic skills needed to make cards with printed images or text. How to set metal type, prepare the press and print using the Vandercook proofing press will be covered, and in addition to metal type, wood type and small images will also be available. Sign up for the companion class Paper Cards and create original paper to print on during this workshop; enrollment in both workshops is not required. Students may also print on other handmade or commercial paper they provide or purchase from SSA. Please see SSA website for a materials list.

4400a | Book Arts Studio Rental: Daily Rate
The Book Arts Studio is available for artists with previous bookbinding experience in bookbinding. Equipment includes standing press, finishing press, plough, sewing punch, stamper, and large Kutrimmer for cutting paper and board and does not include use of the letterpress equipment. Requests for instruction should be made prior to enrollment and may require an additional fee. NOTE: The fee includes access to equipment and a limited amount material. Participants are responsible for all clean up. The studio is available on a first-come, first-served basis, according to Navarro building hours and studio schedule with classes given priority. Prerequisite: Experience with the desired equipment, instruction in studio protocol, permission from the Department Chair, and approval for each piece of equipment used. Requests for instruction should be made prior to enrollment and may require an additional fee. NOTE: The fee includes access to equipment and a limited amount material.
