All necessary equipment will be explained, and handouts will be included. Individual projects are possible and the instructor is flexible to the needs of each student. 4123 | Tool Making and Book Binding Intensive
Learn to make bone and hardwood tools and objects and use them in book binding. The first day, students will learn about the working properties of bone and wood, and how to craft their very own tools and objects. The finished tools may include bone folders and awls for bookbinding, as well as clay-finishing tools, knitting needles, crochet hooks, and more. Elk and deer bone and various reclaimed hardwoods will be available for use. Day two will focus on long-stitch binding with wood boards and textile spine. Although textile and wood are not traditional long-stitch materials, they are more than compatible; there are countless examples of this durable style of binding still holding together after hundreds of years of heavy use. In this unique version of long-stitch binding, the text block and covers are sewn together at the same time, resulting in a rather short assembly compared to the resulting quality. Materials will be explained in depth. Please see SSA website for a materials list. Please register by Sept 29.
