Glass & Mosaic

Among the most ancient of art forms, glass is taught at the SSA in its hot state (glassblowing), its warm state (fusing), and its cold state (flat or stained). Mosaic design, also ancient in origin, has myriad contemporary interpretations and uses from decorative and sculptural to architectural.

9078 | Miniature Mosaics: A Tribute to Hundertwass
Learn the fine art of working miniature mosaics (5 x 7 inches) using Mexican smalt (glass tile) and Spahi's precise techniques for working small and intricate mosaics. Students will use a wheeled nipper to do precision cuts into small pieces that are as small as 3mm squares or 3mm x 5mm rectangles in combination with some bigger pieces to bring balance to the work visually. The mini pieces are worked using the Mosaika Method on the sticky film over an intricate pattern design. The last day of the class you will learn the delicate process of transferring the mosaic onto the wood surface which is attached using a special colored glue recipe. No grout is used with this technique. Students will each receive a kit with a different design pattern based on the works of Austrian artist Hundertwasser; the design you get will be a surprise! Please see SSA website for a list of tools needed. For more information visit Spahi's website www.mosaikashop.wordpress.com.
