8003 | Introduction to Water-Based Painting
Want to start painting but don't know where to start? Get a step-by-step instruction in painting with water-based mediums-watercolor, gauche, and acrylic-through demonstration and hands-on practice. All supplies will be provided or students may bring their own. Let this non-judgmental introductory class jumpstart a new creative direction.

8008 | Color Design
Color Design is an exploration of color theory and color interaction. This course considers color as a descriptive and expressive element of art, emphasizing color perception and application. Investigations of 2-dimensional design problems and the formal, technical, creative, and psychological aspects of color usage will be introduced and emphasized. This is a basic course essential for understanding how to use color and apply it effectively in all areas of art. (No class Nov 24)

8010a | Basic Painting
Basic Painting is an ideal class for the beginning student who wants a structured approach to painting or for the intermediate student who wants one-on-one instruction. The class will cover color mixing, paint application, selection and use of brushes, and other painting tools, as well as painting composition. Students will use a limited color palette in order to learn how to mix a variety of colors. Bring a sketchbook; a materials list will be discussed at the first class. There are no prerequisites; however, Basic Drawing is recommended. Note: Students may work in either oil or acrylic.

8015 | Exploring Personal Imagery
MacDougall will use drawing, collage, mixed media, and painting explorations to help students discover, and uncover, ideas and concepts. Students will begin with drawing materials and a color palette in water-based pigments to study composition while working with both photographic images and their own imagination. Exercises and design studies will develop a fluid, very personal approach to a thematic series. Prerequisite: Students should have taken at least one Basic Drawing and Basic Painting class or equivalent experience.

8019 | Intermediate Watercolor
This watercolor course will employ a unique approach to intermediate and advanced techniques. Creative self-expression and a design mindset will be encouraged; color theory and methods for applying paint will be explored, as will gouache and other materials/methods. Step-by-step demos, along with individual and group critiques, will be regular conduits for learning. Students will work from still life, imagination, or photographs. Bring painting supplies currently in use; additional materials will be discussed the first class. Prerequisite: Previous watercolor painting experience required.

8028 | Portrait Drawing
Artist and political cartoonist Teutsch will lead this workshop on drawing portrait caricatures using pencil, ink, and watercolor. Working from photographic sources, students will learn to identify and focus on distinctive facial features, enhancing those features to create a likeness. The skills covered in this workshop can easily be applied to create accurate portraits efficiently rendered. Tuition includes materials. Open to ages 14 and above.

This class is designed to develop the student's painting style and expand their technical skills. The instructor will tailor discussions and demonstrations to the developing needs of each student-artist. As the class progresses, students will have the opportunity to learn ways of adding other media to their paintings. Prerequisite: Previous painting experience. Bring a blank canvas or a work in progress, images or a sample of finished work, and painting supplies you currently use to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time. Learn step-by-step techniques for painting portraits from live models in one sitting. Class instruction will include analyzing tonal value and mixing flesh tone colors. Students will produce between three and six portraits. Bring painting supplies you currently use, a sketchbook, and pencil to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time. Includes model fees. 8062 | Intensified Abstraction
This course is geared to empower artists with the many possible creative approaches used in abstract expression. Working with acrylic medium on paper or canvas, as well as mixed media applications, the course will concentrate on color relationships and gradations to provide a foundation for abstract exploration. In addition, compositional resources will be explored through geometric design, texture, pattern, and line. Prerequisite: Prior painting experience required. 8080 | Cartooning, Comics, Caricature and Anime
Cartooning, or visual storytelling, is more than just an enjoyable indulgence of the imagination; it speaks to interests such as editorial illustration, children's book illustration, comic strips, comic books, and storyboarding. Its various forms combine caricature, figure drawing, and illustration through the medium of ink and watercolor on paper. Instruction will focus on character development, illusions of movement, sequential staging, setting management, inking, and coloring?all aimed towards the refinement of the student's narratives and ideas. Bring a 9 by 12-inch sketchbook and a sharpened pencil to the first class. (No class Nov 24)

Working from photographs and plein air (outdoor) sketching, students will learn basic landscape principles. Students can explore different grounds and painting media as well as mixed media applications, and study stylistic examples of artists who have worked within these methods. Painting methods and various working approaches will be demonstrated and encouraged. Required materials will be discussed at the first class. This course will explore the fundamental principles of learning how to depict the figure in oil paint, including painting tools, creating flesh colors, composition, painting details of the figure, lighting, and producing contrast and shadows.
