The SSA offers a wide array of classes, at all skill levels, in oils, acrylics and watercolors. Composition, technique, style and conceptual vigor are typically covered in every class – with creative experimentation encouraged along the way.

8003 | Introduction to Water-Based Painting (Full)
$50 @ 50 | SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY CLASS
Want to start painting but don't know where to start? Get an introduction to painting with water-based mediums-watercolor, gauche, and acrylic-through demonstration and hands-on practice. All supplies will be provided or students may bring their own. Let this non-judgmental introductory class jumpstart a new creative direction.

8008 | Narrative Painting
Go behind the scenes with Mexican master painter Rigoberto Gonzalez and find out how he creates his powerful baroque style paintings in this three-day workshop. The artist will demonstrate the principles of baroque pictorial arrangement, tenebrism and chiaroscuro. Starting with preliminary sketches and contemporary reference material, students will proceed to work in oil on canvas to construct a dramatic figural composition using an indirect painting methodology. The painting will be developed through the following stages: imprimatura, velatura, and grisaille, and finish with full color palette. Gonzalez will also discuss artist materials, color theory, color mixing, and the structure, proportion, anatomy and conceptual representations of the human figure. Prerequisite: Previous oil painting experience required.

8010a | Basic Painting
Basic Painting is an ideal class for the beginning student who wants a structured approach to painting or for the intermediate student who wants one-on-one instruction. The class will cover color mixing, paint application, selection and use of brushes and other painting tools, as well as painting composition. Students will use a limited color palette in order to learn how to mix a variety of colors. Bring a sketchbook; a materials list will be discussed at the first class. There are no prerequisites; however, Basic Drawing is recommended. Note: Students may work in either oil or acrylic. No class Nov 26.

8015 | Exploring Personal Imagery
MacDougall will use drawing, collage, mixed media, and painting explorations to help students discover, and uncover, ideas and concepts. Students will begin with drawing materials and a color palette in water-based pigments to study composition while working with both photographic images and their own imagination. Exercises and design studies will develop a fluid, very personal approach to a thematic series. Prerequisite: Students should have taken at least one Basic Drawing and Basic Painting class or equivalent experience.

8018 | Materials and Techniques of Painting
This course will focus on the variety of techniques deployed throughout paintings long history. From egg tempera to acrylic painting, attention will be given to the raw and material nature of each specific medium, learning not only application technique but the chemical composition and historical value of each medium. Students will learn to prepare a variety of painting support surfaces, grind their own pigments using a glass muller and plate, make their own gesso and create a work using each specific medium. This course is designed to enhance a student's ability in finding the appropriate medium for their respective ideas while broadening their understanding of painting. Includes raw pigments and other materials; additional materials will be discussed at the first class.

This class is designed to develop the student's painting style and expand their technical skills. The instructor will tailor discussions and demonstrations to the developing needs of each student-artist. As the class progresses, students will have the opportunity to learn ways of adding other media to their paintings. Prerequisite: Previous painting experience. Bring a blank canvas or a work in progress, images or a sample of finished work, and painting supplies you currently use to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time. 8032 | Painting Portraits
Learn step-by-step techniques for painting portraits from live models in one sitting. Class instruction will include analyzing tonal value and mixing flesh tone colors. Students will produce between three and six portraits. Bring current painting supplies, a sketchbook and pencil to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time. Includes model fees. 8040 | Mural Painting
This class will address the process of creating a composition for a mural or large-scale painting. Topics will include the steps of the process, from a brief history, to preliminary technical and conceptual sketches, and on to various enlargement methods such as gridding and proportional transfers. Students will have the opportunity to participate and work on a mural site with the instructor during the course.

8062 | Intensified Abstraction
This course is geared to empower artists with the many possible creative approaches used in abstract expression. Working with acrylic medium on paper or canvas, as well as mixed media applications, the course will concentrate on color relationships and gradations to provide a foundation for abstract exploration. In addition, compositional resources will be explored through geometric design, texture, pattern, and line. Prerequisite: Prior painting experience required. Working from photographs and plein air (outdoor) sketching, students will learn basic landscape principles. Students can explore different grounds and painting media as well as mixed media applications, and study stylistic examples of artists who have worked within these methods. 8205 | Collage in Painting
This class will focus on the uses-both practical and impractical-of collage as a structural device in the making of paintings. Working with both paint and found materials, students will learn to address painting from beyond the palette and beyond notions of permanence. We will look at the work of Picasso, Braque, Dieter Roth, and Rauschenberg, among others, in addition to contemporary artists such as Mark Bradford, Trenton Doyle Hancock, and Chris Martin. Students will be challenged to create paintings that are both illusory and tactile while retaining a unified vision.
