The SSA offers a wide array of classes, at all skill levels, in oils, acrylics and watercolors. Composition, technique, style and conceptual vigor are typically covered in every class – with creative experimentation encouraged along the way.

8003 | Introduction to Water-Based Painting (Full)
$50 @ 50 | SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY CLASS
Want to start painting but don't know where to start? Get a step-by-step introduction to painting with water-based mediums, watercolor, gauche, and acrylic, through demonstration and hands-on practice. All supplies will be provided or students may bring their own. Let this non-judgmental introductory class jumpstart a new creative direction.

8010b | Basic Painting
Basic Painting is an ideal class for the beginning student who wants a structured approach to painting or for the intermediate student who wants one-on-one instruction. The class will cover color mixing, paint application, selection and use of brushes and other painting tools, as well as painting composition. Students will use a limited color palette in order to learn how to mix a variety of colors. Bring a sketchbook; a materials list will be discussed at the first class. There are no prerequisites; however, Basic Drawing is recommended. Note: 8010a works with oils and acrylics; 8010b works with oils only. No class Jul 4.

8011a | Watercolor Painting
This class is for the first-time painter, as well as the student who would like to learn more about the various approaches to painting in this very direct medium. Demonstrations will be given each week showing students how to paint wet-on-wet washes, dry-on-wet washes and with a dry brush. Color theory as it relates to watercolor will be discussed. Intermediate level students, while developing an independent vision, will learn ways to improve their painting skills through advance demonstration, practice and critique. A materials list will be provided at the first class.

8030 | Painting Studio
This class is designed to develop the student's painting style and expand their technical skills. The instructor will tailor discussions and demonstrations to the developing needs of each student-artist. As the class progresses, students will have the opportunity to learn ways of adding other media to their paintings. Prerequisite: Previous painting experience. Bring a blank canvas or a work in progress, images or a sample of finished work, and painting supplies you currently use to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time.

8125 | Painting the Figure (Full)
This course will explore the principles of learning how to depict the figure in oil paint. It will be structured to teach the student the fundamentals of painting tools, creating flesh colors, composition, painting details of the figure, lighting and producing contrast and shadows. This course will focus on painting from the live model.

8205 | Collage in Painting
This class will focus on the use of collage as a structural device in the making of paintings that are both practical and impractical. Working with both paint and found materials, students will learn to address painting from beyond the palette and beyond notions of permanence. We will look at the work of Picasso, Braque, Dieter Roth, and Rauschenberg, among others, in addition to contemporary artists such as Mark Bradford, Trenton Doyle Hancock, and Chris Martin. Students will be challenged to create paintings that are both illusory and tactile while retaining a unified vision.
