Painting

The SSA offers a wide array of classes, at all skill levels, in oils, acrylics and watercolors. Composition, technique, style and conceptual vigor are typically covered in every class – with creative experimentation encouraged along the way.

8009 | Water-Soluble Oil Painting
This oil painting course will employ a unique approach to traditional oil painting techniques using water-soluble oil painting materials. Creative self-expression and a design mindset will be encouraged. Color theory and methods for applying paint will be explored using water-soluble oils, as well as a low-odor oil paint additive that transforms traditional oil colors into water-mixable oils. Step-by-step demos, along with individual and group critiques, will be regular conduits for learning. Students will work from still-life, imagination, or photographs. Students should bring painting supplies they currently use; additional materials will be discussed in the first class. Prerequisite: Some painting experience required.

Basic Painting is an ideal class for the beginning student who wants a structured approach to painting or for the intermediate student who wants one-on-one instruction. The class will cover color mixing, paint application, selection and use of brushes and other painting tools, as well as painting composition. Students will use a limited color palette in order to learn how to mix a variety of colors. Bring a sketchbook; a materials list will be discussed at the first class. There are no prerequisites; however, Basic Drawing is recommended. Note: Students may work in either oil or acrylic.

8015 | Personal Imagery in Mixed Media
Using drawing, collage, mixed media, and painting explorations, students will discover and uncover ideas and concepts to approach creating a series with a very personal approach. Students will begin with drawing materials and a color palette in water-based pigments to study composition while working with both photographic images and their own imagination. Exercises and design studies will help students develop a fluid thematic series. Prerequisite: Students should have taken at least one Basic Drawing and Basic Painting class or equivalent experience.

8019 | Intermediate Watercolor
This watercolor course will employ a unique approach to intermediate and advanced techniques. Gouache and other materials will be introduced as a minor element. 8025 | The Figure In Drawing and Painting
This course offers a combination of traditional and alternative approaches to the body in art. Students will explore various interpretations of the human form, from representation to abstraction. To develop their personal style, students will work from live models and personal images, using a variety of water-based media and experimental techniques. Bring an 18 by 24-inch drawing pad, a selection of pencils, and an eraser to the first class; additional materials will be discussed at that time. Model fees are included. Prerequisite: Previous drawing experience.

8030 | Painting Studio
This class is designed to develop the student's painting style and expand their technical skills. The instructor will tailor discussions and demonstrations to the developing needs of each student-artist. As the class progresses, students will have the opportunity to learn ways of adding other media to their paintings. Prerequisite: Previous painting experience. Bring a blank canvas or a work in progress, images, or a sample of finished work, and painting supplies you currently use to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time. No class Mar 15.

8032 | Painting Portraits
Learn step-by-step techniques for painting portraits from live models in one sitting. Class instruction will include analyzing tonal value and mixing flesh tone colors. Students will produce between three and six portraits. Bring painting supplies you currently use, a sketchbook, and pencil to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time. Includes model fees. Prerequisite: Previous painting experience required.

8062 | Intensified Abstraction
This course is geared to empower artists with the many possible creative approaches used in abstract expression. Working with acrylic medium on paper or canvas, as well as mixed media applications, the course will concentrate on color relationships and gradations to provide a foundation for abstract exploration. In addition, compositional resources will be explored through geometric design, texture, pattern, and line. Prerequisite: Prior painting experience required. 8087 | Landscape Painting
Working from photographs and plein air (outdoor) sketching, students will learn basic landscape principles. Students can explore different grounds and painting media as well as mixed media applications, and study stylistic examples of artists who have worked within these methods. Painting methods and various working approaches will be demonstrated and encouraged. Required materials will be discussed at the first class. Previous drawing or painting experience recommended, but not required.
