The SSA offers a wide array of classes, at all skill levels, in oils, acrylics and watercolors. Composition, technique, style and conceptual vigor are typically covered in every class – with creative experimentation encouraged along the way.

8010a | Basic Painting
Basic Painting is an ideal class for the beginning or intermediate student-artist who wants a structured approach to painting. Instruction will cover color mixing, paint application, selection and use of brushes and other painting tools, as well as painting composition. Students will use a limited color palette in order to learn how to mix a variety of colors. Bring a sketchbook; a materials list will be discussed at the first class. There are no prerequisites; however, Basic Drawing is recommended. Students can work in either oils or acrylics. (No class Jul 5)

This class is for the first-time painter, as well as the student who would like to learn more about the various approaches to painting in this very direct medium. Demonstrations will be given each week showing students how to paint wet-on-wet washes, dry-on-wet washes and with a dry brush. Color theory as it relates to watercolor will be discussed. Intermediate level students, while developing an independent vision, will learn ways to improve their painting skills through advance demonstration, practice and critique. A materials list will be provided at the first class.

8024 | The Figure In Flesh
Students will develop various methods and alternative palettes which will take skin color beyond basic approaches. Techniques of building flesh tones in oils, dynamic lighting, shadows and color theory will be examined extensively throughout this course. Learn the basic building blocks of flesh tones and quickly move on to the further challenges in oil painting with focus on working from live models. Numerous instructor demonstrations, slide lectures and critiques will also be presented. Bring current painting materials to the first class; material list for flesh tones paints will be discussed the first day. Tuition includes model fee. Prerequisite: Oil painting experience is required. (No class Jul 4)

8030 | Painting Studio
This class is designed to develop and clarify the student's painting style and expand their technical skills. Sauter will tailor discussions and demonstrations to the developing needs of each student-artist. As the class progresses, students will have the opportunity to learn ways of adding other media to their paintings. Prerequisite: Previous painting experience. Bring a blank canvas or a work in progress, images or a sample of finished work, and painting supplies you currently use to the first class; suggestions for additional materials will be discussed at that time. (No class Jul 3)

8031 | Figure and Portrait in Watercolor
This class will concentrate on painting the figure and portraits in watercolor. Composition, tonal values and mixing flesh tone colors will be explored. Students will work from live models and from personal reference photos. Step-by-step demonstrations, individual and group critiques will aid students in this very direct and challenging medium. Tuition include model fee. Prerequisite: Previous drawing and watercolor experience required.

8033 | Narrative Painting Workshop
Go behind the scenes with Mexican master painter Rigoberto Gonzalez and find out how he creates his powerful baroque style paintings in this three-day workshop. The artist will demonstrate the principles of Baroque pictorial arrangement, tenebrism and chiaroscuro. Drawing from multiple sources, students will construct a dramatic figure composition. Starting with preliminary sketches and contemporary reference material, students will proceed to work in oil on canvas using an indirect painting methodology. The painting will be developed through the following stages: imprimatura, velatura, and grisaille, and finish with full color palette. Gonzalez will also discuss artist materials, color theory, color mixing, and the structure, proportion, anatomy and conceptual representations of the human figure. Prerequisite: Previous oil painting experience required.
