While our printmaking studio is exceptionally well-equipped to produce traditional art prints, it is particularly well-known nationally for its commitment to non-toxic printmaking, and for incorporating innovative mixed-media techniques in many classes.

6044 | Introduction to Encaustic Painting (Full)
This three-day workshop is designed to prepare the student with everything needed to begin an independent exploration of this fascinating medium. Students will receive a thorough grounding in the basics of encaustic through demonstrations, hands-on materials, and extensive handouts. We will address safe studio practices, tools and equipment, and basic approaches to wax painting. Students will explore a variety of media and techniques for adding a mark-making language to their work. Time will be spent discussing correct storage of encaustic work along with packaging and shipping. Students can expect to take home several small completed paintings. Co-sponsored by R&F Paint, student will receive almost $100 in medium, paint, and pigment sticks.

6100a | Print Studio Rental: 4-hour block
Studio Rental provides shared studio work time to those experienced in printmaking. Renters must have a good understanding of the print equipment and studio protocol, no instruction will be available during this time. Prerequisite: Please email Margaret Craig, Department Chair at mcraig@swschool.org in advance. Alternate dates are available by appointment. No studio Apr 1 & 2.

6111a | Non-Toxic Printmaking (Full)
In this class, students will explore non-toxic printmaking methods and focus on areas of greatest individual interest. Beginning level students will try various types of printmaking: relief, monotype, collagraph, and etching. Class instruction will include producing the plate or matrix, printing, and editioning. Intermediate-level students will have the opportunity to explore more advanced projects in etching, relief, lithography, and collagraph. A materials list will be provided at the first class. Section 6111a & b is open to all levels. No class Mar 15.

6146 | Botanical Monotypes
Monotypes are a spontaneous way to create one-of-a-kind, painterly prints. Using fabric, stencils, additive, and reductive painting methods, students will produce monotype prints. Over the course of the workshop, students will also work directly from still-lifes. Please bring reference materials, sketches, and various sized brushes. All materials included.
