Launched in conjunction with the Southwest School of Art’s 2015 exhibition of the Institute For Figuring’s Crochet Coral Reef, the San Antonio Satellite Reef (SASR) project is now in progress.

The Institute For Figuring began a Satellite Reef program in 2007 as a way for local communities to participate in its Crochet Coral Reef project (2005-present). Satellites have been hosted in cities across the U.S. and Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.

The San Antonio Satellite Reef is the newest addition to the IFF's worldwide reefing network. It will be created locally by an undercurrent of artists/makers working individually and collaboratively to create a satellite body of crocheted works.  The culmination for the project will be an extensive installation at the San Antonio Public Library Gallery in March 2016.Upcoming Crochet Meet-ups at the Southwest School of Art

Come participate in this amazing project—whether you are an experienced crocheter or a novice beginner!  Over the next year, steering committee members and workshop facilitators will lead crocheting sessions throughout the San Antonio community, both at the Southwest School of Art and in other locations. The crocheted forms for the SASR should represent coral formations which are hyperbolic structures as well as other non-hyperbolic marine organisms. Click here for information on crocheting hyperbolic forms.
