From the President: Paula Owen

Dear friends and prospective students,

SSA’s board of trustees voted on August 16th to approve a Letter of Intent to merge with UTSA at the end of this fiscal year to jointly create a new and expanded school of art that combines SSA programs and UTSA’s department of art and art history.

SSA’s campus will be the hub of the new school, and it will build upon our achievements and our brand, even retaining our name.

UTSA will also retain our community programs, Fiesta Arts Fair, and other events, as well as our commitment to historic preservation. The new school will eventually offer an expanded curriculum to include interdisciplinary and digital design programs.

Our current BFA students will be able to transfer to UTSA for the 2022-23 academic year and will be eligible for federal financial aid. Faculty and staff will shift to UTSA employ.

SSA will operate as usual for the rest of this fiscal year, while faculty and staff from both institutions plan and implement the transition.  A national search for a director of the new school will begin soon.

This next phase of Southwest School of Art, with its increased resources, will catalyze innovative and meaningful projects, attract talented students, serve the community, and benefit our city and region.  You have my heartfelt gratitude for helping to create the success and value that makes it possible for SSA to be a part of this bold, new vision.  Thank you.

With appreciation,

Paula Owen
