Saturday Morning Discovery
Saturday Morning Discovery is a free introductory art experience for families on Saturday mornings during the school year.
SMD has been in place for more than four decades, giving children ages 5-17 a chance to work with artist-teachers in a wide variety of media — ceramics, drawing and painting, pinhole photography, silk-screening, stained glass, origami, and seasonal activities. Parents or guardians often work alongside their child.
In 2006, the San Antonio Downtown Alliance honored Saturday Morning Discovery with its Downtown’s BEST OF SAN ANTONIO Award in the Cultural category – which just goes to show that you don’t have to be the newest kid on the block to enrich lives and have fun.
Each month-long session meets from 9:30 – 11:30am on Saturdays. Advance reservations are required. For more information, call the SMD Program Coordinator, at 210.224.1848 ext 321.
How do I register my child?
SMD for the 2013-2014 school year is full. Registration for 2014 -2015 school year starts online July 16th, starting at 9:00am.
What age does my child have to be to participate?
At least 5 years old, but not older than 17.
Can I drop my child off at SMD while I run errands?
Nope! Parents or guardians must stay with their children throughout the program. But this is often the best part of SMD — because parents can get involved in the art-making process if they want, too!
What classes can I sign my child up for?
While children have a wide variety of options, they do not sign up in advance for art media — you register for the month-long program, not for individual activities. Children choose their activity each week, with four Saturdays making it possible to try everything at least once.
