Why Choose the Southwest School of Art?

For over 50 years The Southwest School of Art has been at the center of San Antonio’s visual arts community, and today serves as the only independent college of art in Texas.

SSA is an extraordinary place set in a beautiful, urban setting…a place where a small, talented group of students shares intense studio experiences within a totally art-focused environment. It’s a place where creative people can find their distinctive voice and flourish as students and artists.

The 4-year BFA degree program revolves around the process of making as a form of inquiry and discovery. SSA students move freely between the creation of one-of-a kind artwork and applied design, as they experience, learn, think, and make. If you have a thirst for learning and a passion making contemporary art, then you should consider enrolling at The Southwest School of Art.Here are just a few other important reasons.

Expert faculty and small class sizes  – The BFA faculty at The Southwest School of Art is made up of established, nationally recognized artists who are also experienced teachers. As practicing artists, they ‘walk the walk’ and are focused helping students find, polish, and share their own unique style of making art. Class size are kept purposely small to ensure that students receive personalized attention as they learn new skills and explore new ideas.

State-of-the-art studios – We believe that a safe, well-equipped work space is very important to the creative process and that successful learning results from intensive, hands-on, studio experiences. You’ll find our studios spacious, inviting, and well stocked with essential tools and equipment.

Reputation for excellence – The Southwest School of Art is a key contributor to San Antonio’s the visual arts landscape and a well respected voice throughout the Southwest region. In addition to our expert faculty and state-of-the-art studios, SSA is home to a highly regarded exhibition program, with more than 20 outstanding exhibitions a year. We routinely welcome nationally and internationally known artists to lecture, teach and exhibit here. Some of these artists include Richard Tuttle, Jon Eric Riis, Sonya Clark, Kurt Weiser, Bruce Metcalf, Miel Paredes, Masako Onodera, Radcliffe Bailey, Zoe Buckman and Juan Carlos Caballero-Perez.
