Why Choose the Southwest School of Art?

For 50 years, the Southwest School of Art has been at the center of San Antonio’s arts community.

In August of 2014, the SSA will welcome its first class of Bachelor of Fine Arts students, becoming the only independent college of art in Texas.

We invite you to consider what an extraordinary place this is — a beautiful, urban setting where a small, talented group of students will share intense studio experiences, within a totally art-focused environment. It will be a place where creative people can find their distinctive voice and flourish as students and artists.

The 4-year BFA degree program will revolve around the process of making as a form of inquiry and discovery. You’ll move freely between the creation of one-of-a kind artworks and applied design … between seeing, thinking, learning, and making.

If you’re the type of person who is passionate about making art, then that’s probably the best reason to consider the Southwest School of Art. But there are other prime reasons.

Expert faculty  – The faculty at SSA are established artists who are recognized nationally, as well as experienced teachers. They truly ‘walk the walk’ as artists themselves and know what’s involved in helping you find, polish and deliver your own unique work. You’ll get their full attention as you learn new skills and explore your ideas.

State-of-the-art studios – Work space is important, and our studios are inviting, productive spaces, stocked with essential equipment, tools, work areas, and safety features. The SSA is all about an intensive, hands-on, studio experience.

Reputation for excellence – The BFA may be a new offering, but the Southwest School of Art’s influence has been earned over many years. We are home to a highly regarded exhibition program, with more than 20 outstanding exhibitions a year. Prominent artists from throughout the nation, and sometimes from outside the U.S., are invited to lecture, teach or exhibit at the SSA; some of these artists include Jon Eric Riis, Sonya Clark, Kurt Weiser, Bruce Metcalf, Miel Paredes, Masako Onodera, Radcliffe Bailey and Juan Carlos Caballero-Perez.

Let us tell you more of the reasons why the SSA could be an important choice during a tour of the campus
